Cryopen Therapy - Advanced Skin Treatment
CryoPen is an advanced cold therapy treatment used to remove selected benign skin lesions by applying a precise burst of extreme cold to the area. Treatment is quick and localised.
Unlike advanced electrolysis, which uses heat and can feel uncomfortable and time-consuming, CryoPen uses a controlled burst of extreme cold and can treat many lesions in a matter of seconds.
After treatment, the area typically darkens and forms a small scab or crust as it heals. Skin tags often detach during the healing process, usually within around 10–14 days, although healing times can vary depending on the lesion type and size. Some lesions may require more than one session.
Please read the before Treatment and after Treatment information prior to booking.

Verrucas often require a course of treatments, with sessions spaced a few weeks apart. Your therapist will assess the verruca, advise on the expected number of sessions, and provide aftercare guidance to support healing and results.
Before Treatment:
- Ensure the area is clean and free from makeup, creams and SPF.
- Avoid tanning (sunbeds or self-tan) on the area for 7 days prior.
- Do not pick, scratch or shave directly over the area on the day of treatment.
- If an active cold sore is present, treatment cannot go ahead. Please contact the salon to rearrange the appointment.
- A consultation and visual assessment will take place before treatment. CryoPen is suitable for selected benign lesions only (including skin tags, pigmentation and benign moles where suitable). If a lesion is not suitable or requires medical review, treatment will not go ahead and advice will be given.
Medical Considerations:
- Diabetes: Healing can be slower and less predictable, particularly where circulation is reduced. Treatment can be carried out if diabetes is well controlled, however GP advice is recommended before treatment.
- Pregnancy / breastfeeding: CryoPen treatment is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
- Blood thinners (anticoagulants): CryoPen treatment cannot be performed if taking anticoagulants. Medication must not be stopped without medical advice.
- Antihistamines: Please do not take antihistamines for 2–3 days prior to treatment unless medically prescribed. If antihistamines are required for allergy management, please seek medical advice before treatment.
After Treatmentt:
- The area may look red or darker immediately after treatment. A blister, crust or scab can form and this is normal.
- Keep the area clean and dry for the first 24 hours. After this, wash gently and pat dry.
- The area should be kept as dry as possible while healing. For the first few days, take care when showering and avoid washing the area directly. Avoid steam, saunas and excessive exercise while the area is scabbing. Normal activities can be resumed gently once the area has scabbed.
- Do not pick, scratch or peel the area. Let it heal and shed naturally.
- Avoid makeup on the treated area until fully healed.
- Avoid tanning (sunbeds or self-tan) until the area is fully healed.
- Use SPF daily once the skin has healed, especially if the treated area is exposed to daylight.
- Healing times vary. Skin tags often detach within around 10–14 days, but some lesions can take longer and may require more than one session.
- Contact the salon if there is increasing redness, spreading heat, swelling, discharge, or any concern about healing.
- A follow-up is recommended around two weeks after treatment. Depending on therapist advice, this may be in person or via phone.
What are the benefits of CryoPen?
- Versatile treatment options: treats lesions from 1mm to 10mm in size
- Fast treatments: treats a 2mm lesion in 10 seconds
- Safe for delicate areas: treats lesions on the face and close to the eye area
- Pinpoint accuracy: does not cause damage to healthy tissue
- Minimal discomfort: little to no discomfort during or after treatment
- No downtime or homecare: no limits on activity except for protecting the treated area
- How does the treatment work? The clinician will hold the applicator as close as possible to the lesion, and move it quickly towards and away from it. Depending on the lesion size and depth, the treatment could be 1 to 30 seconds. After the first freezing cycle, the tissue will be allowed to thaw for about 30 seconds. The second freeze cycle will start. The tissue will freeze faster than during the first freezing cycle.
- What can CryoPen treat? CryoPen cryotherapy can treat all common benign skin lesions including age spots, warts, skin tags, verrucas, cherry angiomas and many more.

Answers to frequently asked questions:
Can anyone have the treatment?
Yes. However, skin types and location should be considered carefully prior to treatment. Can children have CryoPen treatments?Yes. However, parental consent is required. Is the treatment painful? At a penetration rate of 1mm per 5 seconds, the ice will reach the caudal extent of the lesion after a given amount of time related to the depth of the lesion. From that moment, the patient will experience a pain sensation. This may be the moment to stop treatment. There might be a little residual stinging for a few minutes after treatment.
What do patients experience during treatment?
Generally, little or no discomfort is experienced during the first few seconds when you manage to avoid treatment of healthy tissue.
Is there a change in pigmentation after treatment?
Both hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation may occur after cryotherapy, generally lasting a few months, but can be longer lasting. Please ask your practitioner about this before treatment.
What are the risks in darker-skinned patients?
Melanocytes are the most sensitive to cold injury. Therefore, they are the most easily damaged with cryotherapy. Darker-skinned patients need to consider the risk of permanent loss of pigment.
How many treatments are needed?
Most lesions will respond to a single treatment. However, some deeper lesions may take several aggressive treatments to get results.
What follow-up is necessary
Follow-up should be scheduled in 2-week intervals to observe results, and for further sessions if required.
